Sumi Pattern n°3

Sumi Pattern n°3 is an artwork combining mechanical and traditional drawing. It is part form a series called Sumi Pattern. Thisserie explores the link between the traditional Japanese technique of Suminagashi and mechanical plotter drawing. The art of Suminagashi relies on alternating brushstrokes of ink and soap on the surface of water. Each fluid naturally repels the other, allowing the creation of shapes and patterns when they are superimposed. Once the pattern is on the water, the Suminagashi artist can manipulate the elements, such as breath, vibrations, or water movements, to complete the drawing. The artwork is then transferred onto paper, as in marbling.

The drawing is the result of iterations between its physical and digital versions. The digital drawing, produced using 3D design software, is used to define the plotter's path at the time of the physical drawing.

The physical drawing is produced by a mechanical arm programmed to create the effects of colour and matter specific to traditional drawing and painting. Because of the materiality of the tools used, each piece is unique and each error, unexpected occurrence or discrepancy highlights the sensitive aspect that can be contained in mechanical shapes.
